Philips Medical Device recall

By Janice Erdlitz

Lyster Army Health clinic is aware of the recall announcement by Philips that will likely affect many of our patients previously diagnosed with sleep apnea who utilize these devices for treatment. If you use a Philips CPAP machine or BiLevel PAP to treat sleep apnea please visit the Philips website by clicking here.
  • The website provides you current information on the status of the recall and how to receive permanent corrective action to address the two (2) issues.
  • The website also provides you instructions on how to locate your device Serial Number and will guide you through the registration process.
  • Call 1-877-907-7508 if you cannot visit the website or do not have internet.
The registration site is very busy and may not be fully open until next week. If your CPAP or BiLevel PAP is made by a different manufacturer, then you are not affected by this recall. We will continue to post updates as more information becomes available.

Additional information:

Philips is recommending stopping use of these devices until a discussion with your provider about the risks and benefits of continued use can be completed.  After you have registered your device, you may call LAHC at 800-261-7193 to leave a message for your provider so that this discussion can be completed.  If your CPAP or BiLevel PAP is made by a different manufacturer, then you are not affected by this recall.  Given the numerous patients potentially affected by this recall, we would ask for your patience and understanding as we attempt to address all patient concerns.

For Flight personnel every effort should be made to maintain sleep apnea treatment and/or surveillance of fatigue in our ranks. If a waiver for OSA is in place, there is still an annual requirement of 3 months of compliance data and/or attestation of lack of fatigue symptomatology prior to any flight-related duties.

Most importantly, aviation personnel with OSA waivers must be proactive in educating themselves on the recall and acquiring new equipment ASAP, to restore restful sleep. If they are unable to do so, self-grounding is warranted for residual fatigue which would interfere with the conduct of safe flight operations.
