Filling New Prescriptions

We fill prescriptions from both military and civilian providers.

Providers from Our Facility

Your provider may submit a prescription directly to the pharmacy during or after your appointment.
  • You can pull a ticket from the pharmacy kiosk and wait or
  • You can activate the prescription(s) remotely via Q-Anywhere, and pick up later once you receive communication that your prescription is ready for pick-up.

Civilian Providers

If you have prescriptions from a TRICARE-authorized civilian provider:
  • The provider can submit an electronic prescription to our pharmacy, or
  • You can hand-carry a written prescription to our pharmacy. Note: This is the least preferred option.
  • If your provider submits an electronic prescription to our pharmacy, you have the option to activate the prescription(s) remotely via Q-Anywhere, and pick them up later once you receive the communication that your prescription is ready for pick-up.  You can also elect to visit the pharmacy in person, grab a ticket from the pharmacy kiosk, and wait to have your prescriptions filled.
To submit an electronic prescription:
Ask your provider to select the:
  • Pharmacy name: DoD FT Rucker ePhcy
  • NCPDP/NPI number: 0139736/1982010351
If you hand-carry a written prescription:
Check in at the kiosk. Follow on-screen prompts to check in.

Picking Up Your Prescriptions

You’ll need a valid uniformed services ID card to pick up a prescription. This includes children aged 10 and older. New Prescriptions not picked up will be returned to stock after 10 business days from the time that they were filed. Refill prescriptions will be returned to stock after 10 business days from the time that they were phoned in via the refill automated call in line or MHS Genesis patient portal. If you’re picking up a prescription for another person, please bring that person’s valid uniformed services ID (or photocopy, digital picture).

Main Pharmacy and Pick-Up Pharmacy

You can fill prescriptions at no cost from our pharmacy. If you have a prescription from a TRICARE network or non-network doctor, you may fill it here, as long as it’s available on our Basic Core Formulary. Call us at 334-255-7953 to see if your drug is available. We provide up to a 90-day supply for most drugs.

The Main Pharmacy ticket kiosk closes at 3 p.m. daily (excluding holidays, training days, and minimal manning days) to ensure the team can maintain safety and quality control. This will provide time to complete the tickets of those already in the clinic.

The Pick-Up Pharmacy ticket kiosk closes at 4 p.m. daily (excluding holidays, training days, and minimal manning days).  Only prescriptions that are already ready and completely processed are available for retrieval at the pick-up pharmacy kiosk.  Prescriptions not ready will have to be processed through the main pharmacy, which can be done in person or through Q-Anywhere.
Pulling a ticket from the wrong kiosk will delay service/increase wait times.

Drug Take Back Program

Proper disposal of prescription drugs reduces the risk of unintentional poisoning, drug abuse, and environmental harm.
If you want to dispose of unwanted or unneeded drugs:
  • Drop them in the secure blue bin located in main pharmacy lobby area or
Several exclusions apply. This includes:
  • syringes
  • needles
  • liquids greater than 4 ounces
Also, if a medication appears on the FDA Flush List, it may be disposed of by flushing.

Transferring Prescriptions

If you have prescriptions at a TRICARE network pharmacy, you may transfer your prescriptions to our military pharmacy. Call the Express Scripts Member Choice center at 877-882-3335 to learn more about prescription transfers. You can also stop by the pharmacy and complete a prescription transfer form or call 334-255-7953 and speak with a team member who will assist with getting the necessary information over the phone to complete the transfer request.

Basic Core Formulary

All military pharmacies have a Basic Core Formulary. The Basic Core Formulary is a list of drugs that are available at all full-service military pharmacies. Call us at 334-255-7953 to see if your drug is available.

Other Pharmacy Options

As a TRICARE beneficiary, you have other pharmacy options:
  • You can use the TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery to have prescriptions sent to your home. This is the least expensive way to fill prescriptions after filling it at a MTF.
  • If you need a prescription filled after hours or when traveling, use a TRICARE network pharmacy.
Prescription Costs
While there are no costs for prescriptions here at Lyster Army Health Clinic, there are costs for filling prescriptions via home delivery or at network pharmacies for all non-active duty beneficiaries. Visit https://www.tricare.mil/Costs/Compare to compare costs.

Prior Authorization

Prior authorization is a routine process.  We use it to make sure your prescription drug is:
  • Safe
  • Effective
  • Medically necessary
  • Cost effective
You may need prior authorization for your prescription if it: Check the TRICARE Formulary to see if you need prior authorization.

Q: How does TRICARE determine which drugs require prior authorization?
A: The Department of Defense Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meets quarterly to determine which drugs:
  • Are included in the TRICARE pharmacy benefit
  • Identify those that require prior authorization
  • Establish any additional coverage rules that may apply
Drugs that require prior authorization may include but aren’t limited to:
  • Prescription drugs specified by the DOD P&T Committee based on clinical appropriateness and widely accepted clinical guidelines
  • Brand-name drugs that have generic equivalents
  • Drugs subject to age or sex limitations
  • Drugs prescribed in quantities that exceed standard limits
Q: What does prior authorization mean for me?
A: Before filling certain prescriptions, Express Scripts, the TRICARE Pharmacy Program contractor, reviews and authorizes the medication based on criteria developed by the DOD P&T Committee. Once approved, your pharmacist can fill the prescription.

Q: How do I know if my prescription needs prior authorization?
A: The TRICARE Formulary Search tool provides information about:
  • Drugs that require prior authorization or have quantity limits
  • Coverage and copayments
  • Pharmacy forms
  • Options for filling prescriptions
  • Common drug interactions
To find out if your medication requires prior authorization, follow these steps:
  1. Use the TRICARE Formulary Search tool to locate your medication.
  2. When searching, make sure to include your biological sex and age.
  3. Download and print your drug’s prior authorization form.
  4. Give the form to your provider to complete and send back to Express Scripts. They can submit prior authorizations via mail, phone call, or fax.
Q: What’s an electronic prior authorization?
A: An electronic prior authorization, or ePA, is a simple, secure way for your provider to submit prior authorization requests. They can electronically submit prior authorizations for prescriptions filled: Q: How long does the traditional prior authorization process take?
A:  Prior authorization approval takes about 10 days after Express Scripts receives the request from your provider.

Q: What happens if my prior authorization is denied?
A: Express Scripts will notify both you and your provider of the denial, the appeal process, and actions that can be taken to facilitate further review and consideration. Other options include working with your provider to change to a different covered drug or paying out of pocket for your drug.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How do I know if my prescription is covered?
A:  All military pharmacies follow the TRICARE Formulary – a list of TRICARE-covered  prescription drugs and supplies. The TRICARE Formulary lists:

  • Which drugs are covered.
  • Drug information and frequently asked questions.
  • Cost details ($0 at a military pharmacy and out-of-pocket costs elsewhere).
  • Medical necessity/prior-authorization requirements and link to forms.
    • If a prior-authorization and/or medical necessity is required, your provider must submit the request to TRICARE before your prescription can be filled.
Q:  Can my network provider send controlled substances prescriptions electronically?
A:  Yes! By regulations, all prescribers should send controlled substance prescriptions electronically.

Q:  Can I refill a prescription if the last fill was not at a military pharmacy?
A:  Yes! Call our main pharmacy line and ask them to transfer the prescription FROM your current pharmacy. It’s helpful to have the prescription bottle available to give the us the pharmacy name, phone number, prescription number, and medication name and dates.

Q:  Can I pick up medications for another person?
A:  Yes! Please bring a valid uniformed services ID (or photocopy, digital pictures) for all patients getting prescriptions. Please note: Children 10 years of age or older must have their own ID card.

Q:  What is the difference between a new, refill, and renewal prescription?
A new prescription is one a provider writes for a specific quantity and subsequent refills. It may require extra verification or prior authorization.
A refill is an additional supply of your medication that your doctor authorized as part of your original prescription. This pre-approval allows the pharmacy to dispense more of your medication without requiring a new prescription from your doctor. For example, take one tablet daily, quantity 90 with 4 refills. This means the patient can call the pharmacy every 90 days to have medication for a year without seeing their doctor for a new prescription every 90 days.
A renewal is for a medication you’ve already been prescribed but it has expired or run out of authorized refills.

Q:  What if I need a non-formulary or non-stocked medication?
A:  If you’re prescribed a non-formulary medication, there are extra steps for your provider to complete. Non-formulary drugs are non-stocked medications at MTF pharmacies. For these drugs, expect a longer turnaround time for preparation and ordering, or you may have to use an alternative pharmacy option, such as a TRICARE retail network pharmacy or the TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery.

Q:  What do I do if my medication is out of stock?
A:
Ask your provider if they can approve you to switch to an alternative medication.  You can fill your prescription at a TRICARE network pharmacy or TRICARE Home Delivery. TRICARE copayments apply.  Be sure to ask for the expected resupply date so you know whether to wait or seek another option

I’m deploying. How can I fill my prescriptions?

Before deploying, MTF pharmacies can provide your initial deployment prescription in a quantity to support your deployment within legal requirements. You can fill prescriptions and get refills through the Deployment Prescription Program once in theatre if the location is not restricted by foreign postal law.
